  1. Ceasar Frazier - 75

    Ceasar Frazier - 75

Funky soul-jazz organist Caesar Frazier crafted superior Hammond funk. 75, his second LP, is a rare gem. It’s comfortably his greatest artistic statement. The follow-up to Hail Ceasar!, it’s a taut, grooving set that expands his sound and, put simply, it’s got better songs. The key elements of his debut album are all there – production from maestro Bob Porter, accompaniment from hip players (Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, Cornell Dupree, John Tropea) and arrangement from Horace Ott - but the overall sound is elevated. The tightly jamming, expressive jazz-funk makes for a richer, fuller, more satisfying experience. 75 is a mixture of hard-driving originals, deeply beautiful slower numbers to vary the tempo and a couple of classy covers. The crazy bombastic “Mighty Mouse” - a riot of horns, organ and in the pocket drums - became an acid jazz classic at Dingwalls and it’s easy to see (hear?) how. A blissed out, lushly instrumental take on Seals and Crofts’s “Summer Breeze” follows, perfect for those sunshine sets. Side A closes with the heavenly “Sweet Children”. A loping, funky jazz masterpiece famously sampled by Kanye West for Common’s “Real People” from Be. It opens beautifully, with soaring sax and a funky horn section combining with weightless keyboard tones atop snapping drums. Unsurprisingly, the excellence endures right through to the end. The B side opens with perhaps the album’s most famous track. "Funk It Down” contains the familiar “I can feel the funk” vocal refrain throughout. But it’s the gorgeous, insouciant bridge that you should all know and love, having been used as the hook for Gang Starr’s “Ex-Girl To Next Girl”. A great cover of Stevie Wonder's “Living for the City” comes next, with an unforgettable bass-line which anchors the entire heavy rhythm section workout. Dizzying organ, triumphant horns and sun-dappled guitar grooves combine to create “Walking On The Side”, rounding out a pretty smoking set. This is one of those rare 70s funk-soul-jazz LPs on which a bad track cannot be found. It’s all essential. So of course finding original copies on vinyl at affordable prices has been tough for years. Mastered brilliantly by Simon Francis, cut by Pete Norman and with painstakingly reproduced artwork by the Be With team, this fresh Be With reissue ensures this legendary LP now sounds, looks and feels as sensational as it should.

  2. Fat Freddy’s Drop - Special Edition Part 1

Fat Freddy’s Drop - Special Edition Part 1

New Zealand juggernaut Fat Freddy’s Drop return with a new studio album, ‘Special Edition Part 1’, due for digital release on 15th November, with 2LP Vinyl and CD following up on 10th January. The 45rpm vinyl edition is produced with a different track order across four sides and promises to deliver super fat loud audio. Part 1 of a double album, ‘Special Edition Part 1’, comprises of six tracks of which ‘Raleigh Twenty’, ‘Trickle Down’ and ‘Six-Eight Instrumental’ were written and recorded undercover at the band’s Wellington studio, BAYS, while the other tracks; ‘Special Edition, ‘Kamo Kamo’, and ‘OneFourteen’, have all been developed and evolved from the band’s celebrated live jam sessions, whilst on the road in front of audiences worldwide. Supremely crafted at Freddy’s own BAYS studio in hometown Wellington, the deep musical and rich vocal layers reflect Freddy’s inspiration from the black music lexicon and is a response to the crowd energy at their world dominating live shows. ‘Special Edition Part 1’ is the first release of a long envisaged double album project with separate chapters. The next journey, Part 2 will be released in 2020 after stringent road-testing with audiences over 35 shows across New Zealand, UK and Europe celebrating the release of the Part 1. These upcoming live performances will allow the band to fully explore new song-writing technology and give rise to a slamming Part 2. The new album follows on from 2015’s ‘BAYS’ LP, which saw support from Financial Times, Resident Advisor, Dummy, the DJ Mag and Clash-acclaimed ‘Blackbird,’ second album ‘Dr Boondigga and the Big BW’ - which gained rave reviews by The Guardian and BBC Music - and the band’s record breaking debut album ‘Based on a True Story’, which went nine times platinum and remained in New Zealand’s top 40 charts for over two years after its release in 2005. The album cover artwork is by Wellington artist Otis Chamberlain, a continuing evolution from his creation for the its first single ‘Trickle Down’, a work that's morphed from digital cover art to the band’s massive summer tour backdrop and the recently released late-night buttery steppers ‘Kamo Kamo’. Fat Freddy’s Drop have been performing and recording together for more than 15 years, establishing themselves as one of New Zealand's most internationally successful acts. Considered one of the best live experiences in the world, they will embark on their biggest European and UK tour since they sold out a double hitter at London’s 02 Academy Brixton in 2018. Including an already sold out show in Dublin, the band will headline Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena on 29th April 2020, Liverpool’s Invisible Wind Factory on 30th April, returning back to London’s Alexandra Palace on 1st May – the palace was the scene of two triumphant sold out headline concerts in 2014 and 2017 - before heading north to Glasgow’s Barrowland on 3rd May.

  3. Alfi Kabiljo - Sex, Crime and Politics: Cinematic Disco, Jazz & Electronica...

Alfi Kabiljo - Sex, Crime and Politics: Cinematic Disco, Jazz & Electronica...

A compilation of film music from Croatian composer Alfi Kabiljo. For 'Sex, Crime & Politics: Cinematic Disco, Jazz & Electronica from Yugoslavia 1974-1984' release, Fox & His Friends Records owners Leri Ahel & Zeljko Luketic, spent over a year browsing through Kabiljo's sound archives, selecting and restoring his recordings for uniquely themed compilation of film music. This carefully programmed musical journey is focused on his love of classic disco beat, combined with funk, jazz and lush orchestrations, typical for the shady Zagreb nights, populated with detectives and unsolved crimes, worked up journalists and ladies of the 'oldest trade'. One of the films, Honeymoon (1983), labelled first soft-porn in Yugoslavia, caused scandal and critical backlash, but Kabiljo never seemed to bother with provincial morals. The score for Deps (1974), starring Bekim Fehmiu and Milena Dravic is also included, adding funk groove to the overall beat, while critically acclaimed The Journalist (1979) starring Rade Serbedzija and Milena Zupancic launched it into faster, danceable disco gear. The sum of six different films compiled here override its parts and make the continuous flow of one completely new and imaginary film called Sex, Crime & Politics. One might call it a socialist version of Bernard Herrmann's Taxi Driver. Alfi Kabiljo (born 1935 in Zagreb) is one of the few composers from ex Yugoslavia to work in Hollywood and to score films starring A-list actresses like Sharon Stone (Scissors, 1991). His early adoption of various musical styles and instruments led him to pioneering work with synthesizers and electronica, making him a first musician in the region to play with expensive Fairlight CMI machine in the 1980s. He conducted The National Philharmonic Orchestra in London for recording sessions for Sky Bandits score, 1986. Var?se Sarabande released it and included Alfi Kabiljo in its 25th Anniversary Celebration CD Box next to David Newman, Bill Conti, Alan Silvestri, Elmer Bernstein, Basil Poledouris, Hans Zimmer, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Danny Elfman and Howard Shore. All tracks on the 'Sex, Crime & Politics: Cinematic Disco, Jazz & Electronica from Yugoslavia 1974-1984' release are transferred from the original master tapes. Research, selection and track programming was done by Fox & His Friends owners Ahel and Luketic, who continue to discover unreleased musical jewels and help to re-contextualise forgotten and neglected history of East European music. This collection comes right after the critical success of Socialist Disco - Dancing Behind Yugoslavia's Velvet Curtain 1977-1987 double LP for which Alfi Kabiljo also contributed one track. Sex, Crime & Politics: Cinematic Disco, Jazz & Electronica from Yugoslavia 1974-1984 features the music from the following films: DEPS (Deps, 1974) directed by Antun Vrdoljak and starring Bekim Fehmiu, Milena Dravic, Fabijan Sovagovic & Relja Basic; NOVINAR (The Journalist, 1979) directed by Fadil Hadzic and starring Rade Serbedzija, Fabijan Sovagovic, Stevo Zigon & Milena Zupancic; USPORENO KRETANJE (Slow Motion, 1979) directed by Vanca Kljakovic and starring Relja Basic, Boris Buzancic, Lela Margitic & Mia Oremovic; ZLOCIN U SKOLI (School Crime, 1982) directed by Branko Ivanda and starring Zlatko Vitez, Miodrag Krivokapic, Zdenka Hersak & Zarko Potocnjak; MEDENI MJESEC (Honeymoon, 1983) directed by Nikola Babic and starring Slobodan Milovanovic, Biserka Ipsa, Nada Abrus & Ksenija Prohaska; AMBASADOR (The Ambassador, 1984) directed by Fadil Hadzic and starring Miodrag Radovanovic, Elizabeta Kukic, Voja Brajovic & Inge Appelt. 2019 Fox & His Friends

CASINO TIMES - CASINO EDITS 5

Nearly two years on from their last Casino Edits outing and marking six years of the label itself, Casino Times return for Casino Edits #5. The A is a beefed-up take on a punchy European disco staple. An infectious groove is coupled with fluttering arpeggios and a rigorous bassline that builds tension throughout to deliver some peak-time power. Meanwhile on the flip, B1 brings synthesised and organic voices together with eerie melodies and a low slung beat, creating a rock-infused haze. B2 finishes the release off on a house tip, with a relentless percussive loop that bends between mind-melting FX and an uncompromising square wave bass..

  5. Kaytranada - 99.9% 2xlp

    Kaytranada - 99.9% 2xlp

After teasing its release at SXSW recently, Kaytranada presents his highly anticipated debut album '99.9%' via XL Recordings. The album finds the Haitian born, Montreal raised producer delivering on the promise of his early self-released EPs and remixes. Since the age of fourteen, when he first began to DJ and when his brother introduced him to music production software, his output has been relentless. He explains, after he showed me the basics, from that day on I couldn't stop making beats,' pumping out a handful of tracks per day for the next couple of years. Single releases like 'Drive Me Crazy' with Vic Mensa and 'Leave Me Alone' with Shay Lia soon spread his name like wildfire. With that release Kaytranada cemented his reputation and his sound, an undeniable swing of the drums comparable to Dilla's, a signature soulful touch in the melodies and a healthy dose of funky basslines.'99.9%' continues that tradition and new track 'Bus Ride', which features acclaimed percussionist / producer Karriem Riggins as well as rising Toronto vocalist River Tiber, demonstrates that Kaytranada has stayed within his canon while demonstrating growth on the new album.

Soichi Terada & Nami Shimada - Sunshower

White Vinyl Much has been said about Nami Shimada's JPop Bubblegum Deep House anthem. Produced by Soichi Terada in 1989, Larry Levan used to bang it in he Paradise Garage, ressurected by Creme in 2004, over a decade before the hype. What more credentials do you need? Here's all the versions that matter, including a beautiful and haunting Legowelt remix that's rated amongst his best work (by experts that is).

  7. Nu Guinea - Nuova Napol

    Nu Guinea - Nuova Napol

Almost 2 years after the success of the album THE TONY ALLEN EXPERIMENTS and a few months after the release of the 7inch AMORE, Nu Guinea return to the scene with a new LP published by their newborn label NG RECORDS. After touring the world looking for sounds suitable for their vibrations, NU GUINEA decided to go back to square one, Napoli, where Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina were born and raised. They watched their city from a distance reconstructing its energy from their studio in Berlin, calibrating the synths on the meridian of Vesuvius, the volcano that has always protected and threatened Napoli. NUOVA NAPOLI is the result of a long musical research that has become a historical investigation on the sound that shaped Napoli during the '70s and '80s, starting from the contamination of genres (disco, jazz-funk, African rhythms) which ended up in Nu Guinea's DNA. In this album the synthesizers fill the spaces between the past and the future, tightening in a single body acoustic instruments, electronics and voices in Neapolitan dialect. It is the first time that the duo has worked with such a large group of musicians, some of whom are exponents of the contemporary Neapolitan scene. WARNING: We recommend listening to Nuova Napoli while walking in the alleys of Napoli's historic center, around wet clothes hanging and street vendors on tiny three-wheelers.

Crew SDR / Fat B - Don't Give Up (Dj Rocca) / Keep It Coming (Dirtyelements &...

It’s been a rollercoaster of a launch for Daje Funk records, a brand new limited 7” imprint which popped out of nowhere in 2019. Their first two releases, which dropped in quick succession, were nothing short of stellar with huge edits coming from Les Inferno, De Gama, Massimo Berardi & The Funk District. All were well received both critically and by the DJ community with support from some of the best selectors out there including Moplen, Fingerman, Jacques Renault and Lego Edit. You will be pleased to know that DFR003 is just as ridiculously funky pairing up edits from Italian super producer DJ Rocca and another duo of seriously hot Italians Dirtyelements & Drunkdrivers. DJ Rocca, who surely must be one of the busiest producers on the scene, kicks off proceedings with his supremely tight edit of Crew SDR’s ‘Don't Give Up’. This one is feel-good party funk all the way, designed first and foremost for the dance-floor. Building the groove with some great drum programming, jazzy keys and a hip shaker of a bassline, it hooks you straight away before setting things properly alight when the Saxophone kicks in. Changes galore keep the attention and the dance-floor moving. A wonderful track! Flipping over Dirtyelements & Drunkdrivers go to town on Fat B’s ‘Keep It coming’. Bringing in some of the funkiest elements from The Fatback Band’s Bus Stop, it’s a ripping 6 minutes of pure dance-floor joy. The bassline and horns tear up the soundsystem as the looped up vocals merge perfectly with some sublime keys to give the track a dubbed out but hugely energetic disco-funk feel. DJF003 is another release packed with serious quality. Make sure you grab it quick as this one will fly out of the door.
